Our founding Story

Mission-driven founders

In December 2013, during a new year’s meditation retreat in upstate New York, Sab Kanaujia, a veteran digital media entrepreneur facing a personal crisis, met three people who would change his life forever. Bob Thurman and Sharon Salzberg, the two giants in the Western mindfulness space, who were leading the retreat, and a humanitarian officer from the United Nations, who would become his wife within 10 months. Sharon became their daughter’s godmother, and Bob the inspiration behind the birth of Mindwell Labs, the pre-cursor to Autonomic Health. Bob connected Sab to his former Columbia University student and neuroscientist, Dr. Shaun Nanavati, and Nena, Bob’s wife, came up with the name for the company.

Shaun’s mentor for over two decades is Dr. Joe Colombo, a biomedical engineer and neuroscientist, and a pioneering global leader on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the body's control center that automatically runs our body 24/7. In 1995, Dr. Colombo was granted the first and only FDA approval for an ANS monitoring device (parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system). Dr. Colombo has published over 200 papers, holds seven patents, has examined the ANS’ role in hundreds of health conditions, and has authored two major ANS textbooks, with a third coming out soon.

Sab, now dedicated to a purpose-driven life, left the media industry for healthcare, and joined hands with Shaun, Bob, Sharon and Joe to launch Mindwell Labs in August 2019 as a consumer mental health business. In November 2024, they broadened their vision to cover all diseases and launched Autonomic Health with an expanded team.
